What to Bring to a Hostel: Your Ultimate Essential Packing Guide

Packing for hostel

Staying in a hostel can be exciting and overwhelming for some and sad for others, but with whatever feelings you have to get out of your comfort zone and move to a new hostel. However, packing for a hostel stay requires a bit more thought than packing for a hotel. Here’s a comprehensive list of essentials that I took with me to a medical Hostel and wanted to have some guide at that time;

1. Clothing Essentials

Outfits

Pack clothes that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. Think of layers for varying weather conditions. A few pairs of pants, shirts, and a light jacket should suffice. A night suit and at least six suits/outfits you should pack and then you can repeat those by washing yourself or from someone else. Also, pack your formal outfits that you will be wearing in your school/college/office or whatever place you are working.

Comfortable Shoes

Bring a pair of sturdy shoes, I will prefer Plastic for your daily use. Flip-flops are handy for showers and do not easily break due to water. Two pairs of formal shoes for outside are a must, one being Boots/Joggers and one being Sandals.

2. Toiletries

Toiletry Basket

Shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, and a toothbrush are must-haves. Consider buying a basket with a hook that will be very useful to hang while showering. Basket is easy to carry while you go to the washroom from your room, until you get you own attached bath. Buy that basket from here.

Quick-Dry Towel

A compact, quick-dry towel is essential. A face towel is you can get too.

3. Study Supplies

Books and Notebooks

Required textbooks, notebooks, and other required things according to your session and year.

Stationery

Pens, pencils, highlighters, sticky notes, and a planner.

Namaz Mattress(Jaye Namaz)

If you are Muslim or whatever you need to connect spiritually. You can also buy that from here.

4. Sleeping Essentials

Earplugs and Eye Mask

Hostels can be noisy with other people coming and going. Earplugs and an eye mask will help you get a good night’s sleep despite the hustle and bustle.

Lamp

Whenever you need to study at night without disturbing your roommates, you will need a study lamp or book lamp. Buy here.

Others things are:

  • Bed Sheets: It’s always good to carry your own 2-3 bedsheets.
  • Blanket or fleece: Depending on the season and location, you can have yours.
  • Pillow and Pillowcase: It’s important too, isn’t it?

5. Security Items

Padlock

You’ll need your own padlock to secure your belongings. Choose a sturdy, TSA-approved lock for peace of mind.

Hidden Pouch

Keep your valuables like your Id cards, money, and credit cards safe by having a hidden pouch under your clothes.

6. Laundry Supplies

Detergent

Pack a small bottle of detergent if you are going to wash your clothes in a hostel.

Clothesline and Pegs

For drying clothes in your room or outside.

7. Personal Items

Important Documents

ID, passport, student ID, hostel booking confirmation, essential documents and emergency contacts.

Money and Cards

Cash or debit/credit cards.

Medications

A basic first aid kit, which includes band-aids, antiseptic, pain relievers, and any prescription medications.

Admission Documents

Acceptance letter, fee receipts, and other official paperwork.

Medical Records

Immunization records and any relevant medical history.

8. Kitchen Essentials

Appliances

Electric kettle, (fridge, and microwave (if allowed)). One appliance that changed my whole experience in the hostel is SANDWICH MAKER. Believe it or not, It’s the most useful thing that has ever been invented for lazy and studyholic persons like me. You will just throw bread and any leftover from past night and leave it until you get freshen up and be ready and then after 8-10 mins, your freshly made breakfast is ready. Eat it right away or in your way to your class or ward. Here you can buy.

Utensils

Plates, bowls, cups, cutlery, and a reusable water bottle. Cup for you to have your tea or coffee. Although Mess is always provided by the hostel but eating daily from Mess is not economical. Hence it is advised to make your own tea and meals.

9. Snacks

Non-Perishable Snacks

Having a few snacks like granola bars, nuts, or dried fruit can be great for late-night cravings or long travel days.
